TUGUEGARAO CITY – Governor Manuel Mamba of Cagayan has stressed that he will arm the residents of Fuga Island in Aparri, Cagayan, if they are evicted.
Mamba reacted to Chinese investors’ plan to make the island a “Smart City”.
Mamba clarified that he is not opposed to the development of the island but Fuga residents who are in the more than 2,000 need to stay.
According to the governor, resident squatters should still be part of the development on the island even though it is privately owned by the Burgundy Corporation.
After all, the entire island does not belong to the said corporation.
Mamba added that they are trying to help them but they can not move because it is controlled by the owner.
Despite this, he said they have already given a resolution to the Department of Agrarian Reform to award the residents their lands where they have been living for a long time.
The project is just part of the 19 business deals signed when President Rodrigo Duterte visited China in April.
