The Department of Education (DepEd) group of teachers is now calling for its decision to begin the school year on August 24.

In a statement, Benjo Basas, chairperson of the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition (TDC), said a bigger crisis would be expected if it continued to enter the said date as the country’s problems with COVID-19 could extend until August.

DepEd first said they had moved in August to open the class after intensive consultation with stakeholders.

However, students are not obligated to attend school because they implement different learning delivery modes as alternative physical classes.

In Basas’s opinion, however, the alternative way of educating large numbers of students in remote areas would only be discriminatory.

DepEd remembers giving schools the freedom to choose the implementation of learning delivery mode, depending on the health situation in their area.
