Death penalty is not a solution to crime— human rights lawyer

Chel Diokno

A human rights lawyer does not agree that the return of the death penalty in the country will be the answer to crimes such as rape and murder.

“Hindi ako sumasang-ayon dyan. Sa tinging ko, ‘yung totoo at matagalang solusyon sa mga krimen na ganyan ay maayos na imbestigasyon,”said Atty. Jose Manuel Diokno, chair of the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG).

There are those who are pushing for the death penalty again after a series of crimes such as the heinous police killing of a couple in Tarlac and the controversial death of a flight attendant at a hotel in Makati.

“It’s really not the severity of the punishment. It is the certainty, ‘yung sigurado ba tayo ‘pag mayroong nagkasala ay paparusahan. ‘Yan ang talagang wala at malaking pagkukulang dito sa ating sistema ng hustisya, ‘yun bang maraming nakakalusot,” DIokno said in an interview with TeleRadyo Thursday morning.
